Description
©Gill Billington. All rights reserved. It's early spring and the Blackthorn (prunus spinosa) trees are covered in delicate little white flowers with long stamens. These trees make a glorious splash of white blossom in the fields and parks or wildlife gardens from early spring, heralding the end of winter and beginning of summer. They also make dense hedgerows which provide food and protection for numerous animals and insects.
Blackthorn is often confused with hawthorn, whitethorn or mayblossom (crataegus monogyna) although there are some differences. They both have flowers with five petals but the main difference is that Blackthorn flowers bloom before the leaves show whereas Hawthorn flowers open after the leaves appear and have a flush of pink on the blossom.
